Hi, Internet world! If you didn't already know, I'm Kirsty, Eduka’s resident social media guru and attempted translator of tech to human
I've been discovering and learning a lot over the past 6 months and thought it might be time to impart some helpful tips and tricks, some I’ve long known and others I’ve recently discovered for Instagram marketing. NFP’s and small businesses, this one is for you, time to listen up!
If I had to pick a buzz word for 2017 for social media marketing it would be engagement, it’s the talk of every blog (ironically this one as well), LinkedIn post and company vlog. But there is a reason for that. Engagement is particularly relevant on Instagram due to fancy algorithms that mean that other accounts are only seeing your posts if they themselves are engaging with them (gasp). This means it’s harder than ever to gain those ever so sought after likes and impressions, but it also means that when you get them, they’re more authentic, which is a big tick from us.
How can you engage yourself, as well as encouraging engagement on your account?
Engaging with other accounts means people are more likely to look at yours and it’s a great way to build relationships. To encourage greater engagement on your account, try asking your followers questions, it gives them a call to action and something specific to respond to.
Push away those ‘I'm too busy for social media' thoughts and set a 10-minute timer every day to like and comment on posts you like and find interesting. Trust me when I say that 10 minutes a day will make worlds of difference to your account.
One of Instagram’s newest features is the ability to follow by hashtag #yay, allowing you to pinpoint topics that are most relevant to your business. This will also make it easier for you to find accounts to engage with. To do this, head to your search bar and at the top click ‘tags’, search your wanted hashtag, click on it and then select ‘follow’.
Instagram stories are the new (or not so new now that it's 2018) big thing, not just on Instagram but in the social media world! Findings show that a greater % of people see your stories over your posts. This is important stuff people! To take advantage of this rapidly growing space, use stories to post the most important things for your audience, ie. what will be of value to them. If you have crucial information that you believe should be in your main feed, use your story to upload a screenshot of that post, directing more people to your feed.
Posting at the time of day when your followers are most active, increases your chances of them seeing those posts and engaging. To find out your prime posting times, go to your profile, click the graph looking lines at the top, scroll down to the heading ‘followers’ and select ‘see more’, scroll to the bottom and see the times that your followers are most active, on each day of the week. Be sure to check it regularly because this can change on a weekly basis, especially over holiday times.
A few simple changes to your own Instagram game may just help you change it. Enjoy folks and hit us up on our own
